Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) is proud to present a Solo Exhibition by Marcos Conde, the winner of the  live painting competition at ArtLit 2019.  Conde is a South Florida visual artist focused on painting and public art projects. Having overcome extreme adversity thanks to artistic healing, he now uses his creativity to spread joy and inspire others. His work will be on view in the West Gallery/Blooming Bean Coffee Roasters from August 2, 2019 through September 27, 2019. “Marcos’ art has adorned cityscapes, clothing, car wraps and interiors throughout the United States,” said Phyllis Korab, Cultural Affairs Director. “We saw his amazing talent on display at ArtLit earlier this year, and we are delighted to have his work on display at BaCA.”

 

 

Conde didn’t always plan on being an artist. As a child, he immigrated with his parents to the U.S. and would daydream and doodle in class but never took a formal art class while in school. He grew up surrounded by blue collar workers, trying to make a living in a country where they didn’t even understand the language. Because there were no artists in his family or around him, he never thought he would go on to relentlessly pursue the arts for himself in the future.

 

 

 

 

It was after high school, while Conde was taking some classes at a local college, he decided to take a drawing class just for leisure. This class incited the curiosity to pursue a new direction in life. It was also during this time he visited an art gallery for the first time. He subsequently became obsessed with drawing his ideas on paper.

 

His path towards artistic freedom didn’t come without roadblocks however, and after a year, he dropped out of school, ended up incarcerated then completely broke, between homelessness and sleeping on friends’ couches while battling a drug habit.  Deciding he would rise above this situation, he arrived at a rehab center in South America. Part of the program was to use art as therapy. It was here that he discovered the magic that is painting. Since then, he has turned the negativity of the past into a positive outlook he can share with others. He has been obsessed with developing the skills to visually alter his surroundings for a positive change.

 

Marcos has since created public art for different communities through private businesses, schools, and city commissions. He has worked with the arts organization Art N Soul to teach art to underprivileged children in Broward County and has also done workshops for at-risk youth with the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

 

Conde has created art installations for Broward, Miami, and West Palm Beach art events and businesses. His client commissions include city municipalities, public schools, corporate offices, retail stores, and different sized businesses and homes in the U.S.  Highly influenced by the impact of public art on his own life, he has spent the last few years using his experience and creative ability to design and install artwork that integrates into different public spaces. His initiative was to use his creative ability to realize artwork that is available for different neighborhoods to enjoy.
