Born in the Republic of Panama to Chinese parents, MaiYap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas. Within the walls of her parent’s home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Once outside these walls, her senses were overcome by the amazing colors, sounds and energy of the Tropics.

“Happy For You” by MaiYap

She tells The Rickie Report, “Panama provided a bustling backdrop of exciting people, places, and music. Most importantly, its natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration to imagine and create my magnificent flowers and unique landscapes. It also gave me the courage to voice my concerns and fears about our planet’s welfare through my powerful environmental abstracts”.

“Boat at Dawn” by MaiYap

MaiYap asks herself: “Who am I? Where am I going? How can I help the most”?

She says, “The constant search for my true identity, my place in the world and the struggle to preserve our planet are at the heart of all my art pursuits. Painting very detailed and colorful flowers has helped me to reconcile my Chinese background with the vibrant Panamanian world. The wish to anchor myself in this rapid ever-changing world drove me to study the subject of impermanence while depicting the passing clouds and difficult atmospheres. Through the practice of mindfulness meditation I continue to grow while trying to make sense of it all.  My environmental abstracts are the answer to one of my deepest concerns and where life inquiry continues to thrive”.
