MEET   THE   ARTIST:

“Self Portrait On the Indian River” by Patrice Scott

Patrice Scott tells The Rickie Report, “I draw and paint from life, be it figure, still life or, most favored, landscape. My paintings are an extension of my seeing but broadly interpreted and from a vantage point enriched by those artists who came before me. To them I owe a debt. Seeing their work, as a young student, I felt a kinship and a shared passion that set me on a path toward expressing my own vision of the world around me”.

Her art education laid the groundwork for forming that expression, and influencing artists such as Van Gogh, Hopper and Hockney taught Patrice how to interpret what she sees. “But ultimately, it is the act of painting that has developed my own language of expression. Each attempt in a new direction, filled with discovery. That continually renewing journey drives the desire in me to paint”.

“Garage Cafe, Micanopy” by Patrice Scott

Patrice continues, “I find the hot, bright colors of South Florida a palette suited to the use of pastels in particular, and my transition from oil painting a few years ago a natural one, as I ventured outdoors more often. The pure pigment, and their immediacy and tactile nature allows a more intimate connection”.

Most recently, Patrice’s landscapes often feature the lonely, abandoned (and rapidly disappearing) buildings of ‘old Florida’. A push back at all that is shiny and new in this part of the world and further expression of the singularity of the act of painting. She says, ” I find similar subject matter wherever I travel, throughout Florida, North Carolina, and along the Maine coast, a particular favorite. I seek to connect with and translate these landscapes that I love”.

Always drawn to art, Patrice Scott began pursuing her formal education as a teenager at the Cleveland Museum of Art, copying the Van Goghs and Rubens, and the Cleveland Institute of Art, drawing the figure. She earned her degree in studio art and art history at the University of Miami in 1971.

“Groveco” by Patrice Scott

After assisting a gallery owner on Cape Cod and running a sketch walk at Cape Cod National Seashore, Patrice opened and maintained her own gallery in Kennebunkport, Maine. She designed a line of jewelry that was sold throughout the country and was featured at Disney’s Fine Art Show in 1978.

“Sea King and Little Pearl” by Patrice Scott

A return to South Florida over 30 years ago marked a return to painting as well. Today she works both in her studio and outdoors for plein air landscapes, drawing and painting in charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, and oil on canvas.  Patrice organized and ran a figure drawing group, known as “LifeDraw”, for many years, bringing it eventually to the Elliott Museum where it continues today. She exhibits and sells her award-winning artwork in juried shows, galleries and other art venues in Florida and throughout the country, and regularly donates her work and expertise to a number of charities and institutions.
