“This is such a fantastic opportunity for the ArtCenter,” said executive director Nancy Politsch. “We are so grateful that Jason and Nicole have embraced the ArtCenter and the Tequesta art community, and are giving so generously of their time and talents to make our School of Art building purchase a reality. We invite the public to stop by the school in March to see Jason’s fabulous mural. ”
In 2004, Newsted suffered a shoulder injury after trying to catch a falling bass amp head during a recording session. After surgery he turned to painting during his lengthy recovery period as a way to get “what was inside, out.” Painting continued to be a passion after his recovery and he had his first art gallery show opening on May 5, 2010 in San Francisco, California.
After a lifetime of playing loud and earth shaking music, Jason has shifted to the other end of the spectrum, rediscovering himself and playing acoustic guitar with the Chophouse Band. The band’s repertoire includes folk cover songs from legendary acts of the likes of Johnny Cash, George Jones, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Jason Isbell.
Artist, Nicole Newsted
Nicole Newsted has been pursuing an artistic life since growing up in a family of artists in upstate New York. Currently her practice includes painting, collage and wearable art. Nicole went on to study painting on scholarship to Arizona State University and her paintings are in collections across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and America.
“My work is an ongoing survey of the objects around me, both past and present. I am drawn to the cute, kitschy and the saccharine,” states Nicole. “The paintings depict maximalism in a minimalist setting. My work is pure escapism in thought and time. They’re meditations on objects made of plastic and polyester, and the artificial flavorings that in youth, incited feelings of pure joy.”
“Nicole and I love our neighborhood, we love being a part of a community like the one we have here in paradise,” said Jason. “Cherishing and preserving the local music and arts of past, present & future generations is vital for all of us…everywhere!
