TEXTILE FOLK ART COLLAGE

KIANGA PARKER Levels: All

Each participant will create a 2-dimensional collage using African textiles, yarn, paper, beads, and leather. Students will be given templates to assist in the construction of the body and instruction on making any clothing or accessories. Using fabric glues and some minor hand sewing, each collage will adhere to a handmade paper background. Cutting and gluing are the major skills needed. Hand sewing is optional, imagination is required.

HAND BUILT FUNCTIONAL POTTERY  (YIXING TEAPOTS)

YING ZHOU Levels: 1-2

Learn the essential techniques of producing functional hand-built pottery. Students will learn how to create a template and work from it. Slab and coil will be the primary construction methods and surface decoration will include the use of decals, underglaze, brush decoration, wax resist, colored slips, and your own custom stamps. Learn about the construction of Yixing teapots and their function, specifications, and the background behind these historical forms.

Participants can work in any 2D media. The open studio with live models for figure painting and drawing are opportunities to work independently with a nude model to practice and develop your craft. Bring your art supplies of choice. A monitor is present to coordinate participants’ attendance and the model’s poses.

LAYERS OF COLLAGE

MAXWELL MITTMAN   Levels: All

Learning to work with watercolor and mixed media creates an excellent foundation to develop painting skills. Students will learn how to use watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, and ink to develop their expertise. The class will also explore multimedia techniques such as collage, stamping, and stenciling. Participants will learn watercolor basics and how to approach the subject matter of their choice.

 

Incorporate collage techniques into your paintings to create dense surfaces and textures. Liven-up your paintings by layering colored paper, found images, fabric swatches, and natural materials. This class will build from classic examples of collage and grattage techniques by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Max Ernst, and Romare Bearden. Digital collage with Photoshop will also be discussed during the class.

Make your business look great online and on a budget! You will learn to set up a small photography studio with basic lighting to further your small business. Using smartphone, point & shoot, or DSLR cameras, you will learn how to shoot for the web, social media, public relations, and print media to effectively promote your business. A camera (smartphone, point & shoot, or DSLR) and knowing how it functions is required.

HOW TO SCULPT ANIMALS FROM THE INSIDE OUT

AMY WOLSKY Levels: 1-2

This class is for the beginner and intermediate sculptor who are interested in sculpting animals, be it imaginary or a family pet. Students will learn to construct an armature by studying the animal’s anatomy; muscle structure, fur, claws, whiskers, and paws. Students will be introduced to DIY tools such as eye shadow brushes, dental tools, and bamboo tools.

This course will teach how to transfer your drawings, paintings, photocopies, or computer images onto a Solarplate™ and print with water based inks. The process will keep students experimenting and discovering new ways to create, integrate, layer, and color prints.

NEW!  PLASTICS, RESINS, AND SILICONE MOLD MAKING FOR JEWELRY

NICHOLAS KAKAVAS, Artists-in-Residence, Sculpture   Levels: All

Students will create small scale silicone rubber molds from found or sculpted objects to make fun parts for a necklace and/or ring using liquid plastics, resins, and basic metal working! Mold making, pouring plastic, resins, and jewelry fabrication processes will be demonstrated. Enjoy exploring the possibilities of light weight materials in a variety of colors to make adornment.
