Workshops and Select Fridays
In the month of November you can try your hand at plein air painting at night, paint animals, learn dyeing techniques with indigo, make a fabulous piece of fused glass, loosen up your pastel technique or, for the traveler, how to capture the beauty of your travels in watercolor. Our award-winning artists will teach you step-by-step the methods to create one-of-a-kind works of art in one- or two-day workshops.
If you are looking for a fun way to spend your Friday evenings, pop into one of the Select Fridays. These one evening sessions are fun and informative. Enjoy painting, glass, jewelry and making starfish dishes in November! Watercolor for the Artist-Traveler

Learn how to create beautiful watercolor washes over watercolor pencils to capture those colorful details of your travel. Experiment with techniques to create lifelike wood, old rusted metal, and stone textures, so you can master painting those old doors and windows full of flowers from your favorite travel destination. This workshop will emphasize the combination of watercolor pencils with regular watercolors. All levels welcome, with a working knowledge of watercolor.
Paint A Nocturne En Plein Air

From Caravaggio to Hopper, painting the night is a centuries-old tradition. Follow in these footsteps by exploring techniques to capture light and darkness alla prima in this 2-day workshop. The first night we will cozy up in the studio to go over the essentials of nocturne painting while enjoying some vino and nibbles. The second night we’ll be ready to venture out into the dark to implement the new knowledge. Oil preferred, acrylics acceptable. Intermediate to Advanced.
Painting Birds

This is not your average bird on a perch workshop. Bring your own photos of your choice of bird, or use photos from the instructor. Composition, values, color and edges will be emphasized. Most students will be able to complete a painting in the 2-day workshop. Intermediate to Advanced.
Congratulations to Karen for winning the August-September Plein Air Salon Art Competition for the Animal and Bird category. PleinAir Magazine conducts the annual Plein Air Salon Art Competition. The competition is in the spirit of the French Salon created by the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with six bi-monthly cycles leading to annual Salon Grand Prize winners, is designed to stimulate artistic growth through competition.
Fabrics – Dyeing with Indigo

Students will initially learn how an indigo vat is made. A vat will be prepared in the morning and the basic chemistry explained. The natural indigo powder will be used, and the vat will be ‘reduced’ using a commercially available chemical. Students will be shown shibori techniques: a folded and clamped method, and a twisted and tied technique. Students can expect to make several pillow or napkin-sized samples. Supplies included. Beginner and Intermediate.
Loosening Up With Pastels

Learn to work in a looser, more abstract style with pastels and to love your “happy accidents.” In this class we will create several small pastel works with a limit on the amount of time you have to do them. You will have specific exercises to complete with a focus on color studies and color schemes in landscape and still life compositions. All levels welcome.
Fused Glass

Enjoy in-depth instruction on various techniques and methods, and create a one-of-a-kind, individual, gallery-quality piece of art at this 1-day workshop. Participants explore color theory, design composition, the use of materials, supplies and equipment. Fire in our new glass kiln! Your work will be available for pick up one week after class ends. All levels welcome.
Dog Portrait Painting

Would you love to have a permanent record of Man’s Best Friend? This 2-day workshop will use photo reference, combined with knowledge of shape, edges, and values to create a finished painting of your or anyone’s dog. Learn about how to express volume and light/shadow, as well as techniques to express fur and hair. Using shape and color and edge work, we will endeavor to capture the essence of your furry friend. All levels welcome, experience is beneficial.

No matter what your level of artful expertise is, our Select Fridays are for you! Always wanted to explore different art mediums or try your hand at a creative endeavor without the commitment of an 8 week class? It’s fun at the Select Fridays events…you can join your friends and have a great time exploring different art mediums and walk away with a wonderful piece of art that you did yourself!
Glass Fusion

November 2 6 – 8 p.m.
Location: Gallery Master Studio $50 per person, supplies provided by the ArtCenter
Invite your friends or significant other, bring your favorite beverage, and get ready to go on a fun, creative journey. You will learn all about fusing glass into dishes, jewelry, vases and ornaments. You will create a 5” x 5” piece of art, with instruction, in a casual relaxed atmosphere. No experience necessary.
Creative Acrylic Pouring

Location: Studio A at the School of Art $50 per person, supplies provided by the ArtCenter
Bring your creative imagination, and your favorite bottle of wine to a new and fun acrylic pouring Select Friday Night. You’ll be creating your own palettes while learning how the pouring medium reacts to the acrylics, forcing the medium to flow and produce a vibrant and colorful piece of art. Paint and pouring mediums are included, bring your own canvas or panels. Call or check online for supply list. 21 and order please.
Starfish Dishes

November 16 6 – 8 p.m. Location: Ceramics Studio at the School of Art
$40 per person, supplies provided by the ArtCenter
Students will make their own nesting starfish dishes (3 in total). You will first focus on construction techniques and learn how to use the slab roller, followed by decorative techniques using piping bags, letter stamps and craft foam. All clay and tools will be provided. Instructor: Jeni May
Wine and Paint Night

November 30 6 – 9 p.m. Location: Studio A at the School of Art

Bring a friend and your favorite beverage and enjoy a night of creating and learning painting techniques from professional artist Randall Scott. Paint an original masterpiece with step-by-step instruction in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Over 21 only.
Fun Friday Rings

November 30 6 – 9 p.m. Location: Gallery Master Studio
$50 per person, supplies included by the ArtCenter
Enjoy your evening learning how to size, solder, texture and finish silver rings for yourself or your significant other. Everyone will leave with a finished ring and a basic understanding on how to use the torch and hammers for texture.
The Lighthouse ArtCenter, a 501c(3) not-for-profit, was founded in 1964 by eight artists and Christopher Norton. In the last 54 years it has grown to include a gallery, school of art, gift shop, and art supply store. Supported by memberships, sponsors, and grants the ArtCenter now serves over 20,000 guests, 2,500 students, 45 faculty members, 500 summer ArtCampers and a comprehensive outreach program to benefit underserved and disabled residents in the community.
