Marilyn Johansen is a Featured Artist at the “Portrait of a Warrior” Exhibition at Studio 18, presented by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division.  The public is invited to this exhibit, showcasing paintings honoring U.S. Military veterans.  The Opening Reception takes place on Friday, June 3rd and the Exhibit continues through July 14.  The Rickie Report shares Marilyn’s prolific artistry, the details of this Exhibit and another Exhibit taking place in Sunrise, FL commemorating Veteran’s Day and Marilyn’s acceptance into the ASAA 2016 International Aerospace Art Exhibition at the James C. Local artist, Marilyn Johansen, of Lauderdale by the Sea has been honored with the acceptance of her work in the ASAA 2016 International Aerospace Art Exhibition at the James C. Weston Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI. Mrs. Johansen was one of the 36 artists from around the world whose work was selected from over 100 entries. The display opens June 1st and runs through July 25th. Her work, titled “Leaving Quang Tri to Phu Bai” depicts the conflict in Southeast Asia during the 1960s. The American Society of Aviation Artists was formed in 1986 to bring together, in one professional body, artists who are acknowledged leaders in the field for the purpose of recognizing and promoting interest in aviation art as a fine art form.

Artist members are selected by a group of their peers on the basis of their demonstrated abilities and experience. Membership currently numbers over 200 artists and associate members representing all corners of the United States. Foreign affiliates are also welcomed, with members hailing from a number of countries around the globe. The ASAA holds annual forums which cover a variety of subjects and valuable information for artists, collectors and aviation enthusiasts alike. This year’s Forum opens its six-day program in Kalamazoo on June 2nd.

Marilyn is proud to present a series of art work titled “Soldier Series, War and Remembrance”. She honors our US Military through time and events based on her strong connections of the past. Her father was a career military Air Force pilot who flew in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. She tells The Rickie Report, “I’m from’ the world’ as I lived from Brussels, Belgium to Okinawa to Georgia, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Florida following my father’s assignments”.   Her husband served as a Marine in Vietnam and her nephew did a tour of duty in Afghanistan. These events are included in the paintings of her series to date. The series will continue to grow as she reaches out to family and friends who wish to honor their family members for their military service. The series began with a painting to honor her husband’s service during the Vietnam War. This painting has three elements: a letter, a photo and the American Flag. The painting is currently in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the American Society of Aviation Artist Exhibition. The second painting speaks to her father’s experience as a WWII POW. A P-38 pilot in WWII, he was shot down on his 43rd mission and ended up a POW at Stalag Luft III (site of the Great Escape). Attending some of the reunions of these POW’s, Marilyn has gained deeper insights into the drive and seriousness of these men, now in their nineties. She took a photo and painted these four men watching a film made about their own experiences as POW’s. They were first held in one of Hitler’s Concentration Camps before being ‘saved’ and sent to Stalag Luft III POW camp.

Marilyn uses different styles to change the feeling of each painting for the viewer. Continuing with WWII, she painted her Father at age 20 as a WWII Army Air Corps Cadet. He graduated from flight school at Luke Field in 1942 and served under General Jimmy Doolittle in North Africa. In order to honor all WII veterans, she read about the Honor Flights which provide WWII veterans the opportunity to fly to Washington and other sites to see the monuments and museums left in their memory. Another painting is of a group of kids at the Fort Lauderdale Airport waiting to welcome home the WWII veterans from their trip to Washington DC to see the WWII Memorial. It bridges the generations.  She used yet another style of painting to illustrate her husband’s service in Vietnam in 1968.  Photos of her nephew were sent to celebrate his service in Afghanistan in 2012.  Marilyn’s painting styles vary as much as the wars and places and details themselves. She captures commitment, service and sacrifice in each of her presentations.

Marilyn Johansen paints in all mediums but concentrates on watercolor and mixed media.  She is a popular instructor at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale. As an award-winning artist, she reflects the skills necessary to challenge her students toward higher accomplishments, new techniques and continuing interest. She tells The Rickie Report, ” As a former school teacher, I’m able to present these skills and challenges in an environment that will create interest and effort through my ability to teach by creating the best possible learning environment. I do art demonstrations, teach workshops, judge art exhibitions and coordinate art exhibitions”.

Marilyn is a Signature Member of Gold Coast Watercolor Society, Miami Watercolor Society and Palm Beach Watercolor Society. She has memberships with several local, state and national watercolor organizations and competes in local, state, national and international art shows. Marilyn recently served as President for Gold Coast Watercolor and Florida Watercolor Societies.
