At the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s 2nd Annual Plein Air Festival, 50 award-winning artists who paint en plein air will be competing for $10,000 worth of prizes from March 12 to 15. Local as well as nationally award winning artists hailing from 18 states as far away as Alaska, will take part.  There will be MANY opportunities for art lovers, art patrons, children and painters to be involved.  The Rickie Report shares the details and some photos from last year’s event.  The events take place rain or shine and promise to enthrall viewers!

Open to All Artists and Public

On Sunday, the juried artists and any artist who would like to register, will compete in a “Quick Draw Paint Out” held from 9 a.m. to Noon at DuBois Park (Jupiter), with the top prize of $1,000 for first place.

COLLECTOR’S PREVIEW

Art collectors will have several opportunities to purchase high-quality art with a local flair. On Saturday, March 14 at 6 p.m., is the Collectors’ Preview and Reception where art lovers can meet the artists and have first pick of the art created that day. Tickets to the Preview are $50 per person and include a $50 credit toward a painting purchase at the Festival. Tickets also include the Collectors’ First Look on Friday evening at 5 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public on Friday at 6 p.m.
The community will enjoy seeing the artists paint on location, as well as painting demos by Symi of Rosemary’s Brushes, an English company specializing in fine brushes.

FREE KID’S PAINT OUT

LAC Plein Air Festival Kid’s Quick Draw, 2014

On Thursday, March 12 at 3 p.m., a “Kids’ Paint Out” event will kick off the Festival at Constitution Park in Tequesta. Children can register in advance at the Lighthouse ArtCenter School of Art at 395 Seabrook Road or on the day of the event. Painting supplies will be provided and the kids will receive certificates and prizes at a ceremony at the Museum at 5 p.m., followed by a reception where the public can meet the juried artists who will be officially painting in the festival.

AWARDS

The awards ceremony will be on Sunday, March 15 at 4 p.m. at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum. The paintings will be judged by Marisa Pascucci (curator, Boca Museum), Morgan Samuel Price (nationally recognized artist and instructor), and Glenn Tomlinson (curator, Norton Museum of Art).

The Plein Air Festival is co- chaired by Pat DeAloia, Ted Matz and Ralph Papa.  “Plein Air painting has seen a worldwide resurgence in popularity,” said Ted Matz, Co-Chair of the Plein Air Festival and the ArtCenter’s Chair of Painting and Drawing. “We offer classes and workshops in plein air painting, which have become very popular.”
“We are excited to welcome the 50 juried artists who are outstanding painters on a national level, many of whom are featured on the covers of art magazines,” said Katie Deits, Lighthouse ArtCenter Executive Director. “This is an amazing opportunity to collect high-quality paintings by recognized artists.”

En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The mid-19th century saw working in natural light become particularly important to the impressionists, which only increased with the introduction of paint in tubes, giving additional portability to the artists.
