Meet and Greet the Artists of Plein Air Palm Beach County!
Plein Air Artists can be spotted in Southeast Florida, with their paints and easels, transforming the ordinary into a special moment captured in time. As with the spectacle of the swallows of Capistrano, this may be a rare sight in the wild. However, the people of Palm Beach will soon have an opportunity to see plein air artists all together and with a magnificent display of their paintings. The Rickie Report shares the details about the Meet and Greet the Artists of Plein Air Palm Beach Saturday May 10th at 2-4 PM.

Plein Air painting has become a ‘big deal’ in the art world over the last few years. En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and to the Impressionists. Since the advent of social media in the last decade, there has been a resurgence of plein air painting groups.
South Florida, through the Palm Beach Plein Air Artists Society has been active and involved in this delightful approach to painting, a legacy of the Impressionists.
This exhibit showcases the artwork of the group co-founded by Donna Walsh & Ralph Papa, Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB). The exhibit is a joint project with the Cultural Council and Plein Air Palm Beach exhibiting the work of local area and visiting artists of all the beautiful and favored places to paint in Palm Beach County. Plein Air Palm Beach Artists painted out in the ten, different locations over the course of 10 weeks, a different location every week between December and February.

Sometimes the weather did not cooperate, but that did not stop the hard core artists. If you attend this Meet and Greet you will get to hear all the behind the scene stories of the artwork on exhibit and there are many great stories. During the course of this project over 80 different artists participated and well over 200 paintings were produced.
Plein Air Palm Beach began as two separate meetup groups for plein air painting. One of our contributing artists, Mary Mirarito, described her joy in finding fellow plein air painters by saying, “When I moved here and found the meetup site for Plein Air Palm Beach, I felt like I joined an art dating site and found the love of my life.” In the spring of 2013, Ralph and Donna decided to merge the groups. Later, with help of key participants, the meetup group was formalized to become Palm Beach Plein Air.
On April 22, 2014 at a meeting at Delray Center for the Arts, they signed the incorporation papers to file Plein Air Palm Beach, Inc. as a not for profit corporation of Florida.
Plein Air Palm Beach is for art lovers and artists at all levels who love plein air painting in and around Palm Beach County and the surrounding South Florida vicinity. The group was organized to bring artists together to paint the land, sea and cityscapes in beautiful south Florida. Plein Air Palm Beach welcomes resident artists and visiting artists at all levels to come out with us to paint and document today’s landscapes that contribute to tomorrow’s history.
To find out more about us, see their website at http://www.pleinairpalmbeach.com/ or checkout their meetup site, http://www.meetup.com/palmbeachartists/, where the paintouts are scheduled. If you have never painted outside, it can be a bit intimidating, but it is an enormous amount of fun when you go with a compatible group. As Donna Walsh put it, “Once people paint with us, they can’t wait to come back. We plan going to many places in Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties and have a lot of fun.”
Palm Beach Plein Air Artist’s mission is to foster the education, participation, appreciation and exhibition opportunities for plein air painters in Palm Beach County. They welcome support and sponsorship from the cultural community to enhance their mission.
