Naomi Cordero, a contemporary portrait sculptor and painter for over thirty years, was born and raised in Fairfield, CT. Though mostly self-taught, this innovative artist and Palm Beach Gardens resident honed her skills at the Armory Art Center under the guidance of master portrait sculptors, Muriel Kaplan and Bert Deiner, former President of the Art Students League in New York City, who called her “naturally gifted”. Naomi also refined her painting skills at the Academy of Fine Art & Studio in North Palm Beach.
Within her first few years as a professional artist, Naomi’s work has been shown at various art galleries in Florida including The Frankel Gallery, The Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, FL and The Phillips Fine Art Gallery in Sanibel Island, FL. Currently, Naomi is a resident artist at Art on Park in Lake Park, FL.
Naomi’s style is not a conscious choice. It just comes to her naturally. She expresses what she feels, resulting in an intuitive technique without any preconceived notion of what will appear. What comes out of this free-form process are paintings featuring elongated faces with large, expressive eyes and a strong contrast between light and dark values.
Oil and mixed media are her mediums of choice. After many layers of loose and expressive brushstrokes of oil colors that are swished and dabbed by paint brushes and palette knives, the characters of her portraits reveal themselves through their facial expressions and emotive eyes. By way of surrealism and realism, these larger than life faces form an emotional connection with the everyday art lover allowing that person to see the true beauty that lies within the larger image.
