“Ruffled Feathers”

“Ruffled Feathers”  is an oil painting on canvas of the Snowy Egret, the beautiful and delicate wading bird.  She tells The Rickie Report,   “ I chose this exquisite bird for a couple of reasons.  It is a familiar sight in my Palm Beach Gardens community, a residential development with a preserve setting that is also an Audubon Signature Gold Medallion Sanctuary.  And, along with its cousin, the Great Egret, the Snowy was on the brink of extinction in the late 1880’s, slaughtered by the millions by plume hunters who sold the brilliant white feathers to decorate ladies’ hats.  If not for the  grassroots zeal of two Boston socialites intent on saving the birds (and kick-starting conservation laws and the National Audubon Society in the process), this stunning egret would be gone.”

Dorothea goes on to explain, “I love photographing and painting birds. I’m very excited about being part of this show!   I have been painting for almost fifteen years and have transitioned from watercolors to oils.  I love oils for their vibrancy and fluidity and never tire of creating”.

Dorothea is a member of several Art Associations, including the Lighthouse ArtCenter and the North County Art Association.   She maintains a space at  The Village Art Studios in Tequesta at Gallery Square North,  377 Tequesta Drive.  That’s where you will find her most Thursday mornings and other days of the week from time to time.   She describes the studio as a “room of my own, a home away from home where I can fulfill my desire to create”.

Her passion for art began as a young girl on Long Island while watching the syndicated television program “Learn to Draw”, led by the self-taught artist, John Gnagy.  She sketched whenever she had the opportunity.  Like so many other women of her generation, the ensuing years were filled with raising a family, sustaining a career, and developing as a person.  After retirement from her professional life in the dental field, Dorothea decided to take formal art classes and studied with a watercolorist in Stony Brook, NY, who not only taught but also exhibited around the United States.

“As the years passed, I needed a change and was drawn to the vibrancy and fluidity of oils.  I prefer using a variety of my photos for reference in my compositions as well as what I see in my imagination.  I love the contrast of lights and darks. Currently a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, I continue to take classes and have my own studio space in Tequesta at the Village Art Studios in Gallery Square North.  The studio is a cooperative working studio and gallery situated next  door to the Lighthouse Art Center.   I continue to be passionate about my art, looking for new avenues to challenge my need to create…,” Dorothea shares.
