Susan Hanssen will be the guest at this WITVA meeting.  Susan is an award winning and accomplished artist residing and teaching in south Florida.   She teaches in Fort Lauderdale.

Artists are asked to please bring 1 or 2 pieces for critique and suggestions for improving your art.

Susan Hanssen is a signature member of NWS and Florida Watercolor Society.   She works primarily in watercolor and gouache. Her paintings are generally figurative, although recently she has been exploring non-objective painting.  Her “Sheep Series” continues to be a favorite, combining allegory and whimsy in a variety of executions.

The  collection, “On the Subject of Sheep”  was exhibited at the Coral Springs Museum of Art in March of 2008.  A painting from the series, “She’s Come Undone” was part of  the National Watercolor Traveling Exhibition  in 2009.  Most recently Hanssen’s work was displayed at the Rossetti Galleries “Best of the Best” show in 2010.  Her painting “Foiled Again” won the Gold Award at the Florida Watercolor Society Exhibition in 2010 and was in “Splash 13.”  For more information:

I taught for many years at The Traphagen School and at Parsons while simultaneously working in the Bridal Industry as a Bridal Gown designer.”

For several years, Phyllis was the Curator of The Traphagen Costume Museum which housed a famous collection of period and regional garments.  She retired from this busy life in order to devote herself to painting portraits which is her true love.

She tells us, “It is interesting to see how many wonderful ideas come from looking “out of the box”.  Jewelry is small example of the ability to transform things that are considered “waste” into artistic and fun art. It gives one a feeling of joy to know what we can do if we just give it some thought.”  She also studies the classic methods of the jewelry art  and finds  combining those practices with modern techniques, makes “one of a kind” wearable art more interesting.

Michael Graber has been a working artist for over forty years; He studied at Queens College, New York. Adelphi University in Garden City, New York at the Royal Academy of the Arts, London. He has been a teacher for over twenty years, to both youth and seniors.  His students have won national recognition. Michael has designed interiors, furniture, fine and costume jewelry, and has done set designs for musical theater. At present he has a small mural business and teaches full time during the day.

Michael believes everyone is creative, and can achieve painting and drawing skills with the right direction and philosophy. He never compares one persons skill to another, nor does he try to get an artist to paint in his style, but encourages all to be themselves, express themselves, and above all learn to see the world through the eye of a painter. There are great artists, but not all great artist can be a great teacher.
