The show offers a wide range of educational activities and exhibits. Visit the demonstration area where society members will be showcasing skills learned in club classes. We have also invited several local education based clubs to display at our show, as well as the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. We will also have speakers.

The Society offers many types of educational and cultural experiences. We operate a full lapidary shop open to our members. We also offer classes in lapidary and jewelry making for adults as well as children.

Our monthly meetings are held at the building across from the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in Dreher Park on the 3rd Thursday of each month and feature guest speakers or demonstrations that are educational as well as entertaining.

About the PBCQG:

Do you like to work on projectAprils in your own home? We have directions available for our Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County Welcome Home quilts, and for Project Linus quilts. We also have directions posted for a great name badge holder you can make for your name tag, the PBCQG logo patch, and pin. Or, you can sew interesting items for the Boutique committee as they dream up new items to offer in the Boutique at our Guild meetings or at our shows.

Do you prefer to work in a group? We gather after meetings several times a year for community outreach “sew-ins” where you can cut, press, sort, sew, bind, or quilt projects for veterans, Habitat for Humanity partner families, and other Palm Beach County community services. Additionally, many members gather in small groups around town to work together on community projects. See the list in each month’s newsletter.

Do you like to help children learn about quilt-making? We love helping children (and their parents) learn about and appreciate quilt-making. Our largest project is our Kids’ Corner throughout the seventeen days of the South Florida Fair each year. We have offered different activities over the last 30 years, but all of them involve a way for children – even the young ones – to make something related to quilt-making. Currently, the children use crayons to draw designs on light-colored fabric that we heat-set and make into small Project Linus quilts – often right there at the Fair. Children and parents often stop by later the same day to see the quilt that their block is in. These quilts are distributed to community-based organizations throughout Palm Beach County – many are carried on fire trucks and used to comfort children in crisis situations. The Fair lasts for seventeen days each January and we always need members (and their friends and family) to help with Kid’s Corner and with other tasks such as demonstrating hand-quilting, machine-quilting, and offering opportunities to win the special theme quilt available that year. Get free admission the day you work!

Sign up to work a shift of your choosing at any Fall Guild meeting or by contacting Nancy Ialacci or Donna Jesse. We especially need volunteers to work the evening shifts – that way, you can enjoy the Fair during the less-crowded daytime, have dinner, and then work the booth from 6-10 pm

Another way we help children learn about quilt-making is to conduct special programs, such as the quilt-making class at the Fair’s summer camp in Yesteryear Village. Children, 8-12 learn what life was like in “the old days” and they learn basic sewing and quilting skills.

Do you like to learn new skills? Most Guild meetings include a program, which teaches a quilt-making skill or concept. During the year, we have several workshops with talented local, regional, and national instructors on tradition, modern, and art quilt-making. Do you enjoy sharing your quilt-making knowledge with others? Let the Guild vice president or workshop chair know that you are interested in teaching a short program or a long workshop.

Would you like working with our wonderful library of quilt-making books and videos? You can help the library committee catalog new acquisitions, lend and receive the books and videos, or help members find ones related to their quilt-making interests.

Would you enjoy helping with our annual challenge, or the construction of our annual Fair and “opportunity” quilts? Contact the committee chairs and let them know.

How about assembling membership packets? Preparing Birthday Basket fat-quarters? Holding quilts up for display during Show and Tell? Just contact the committee chair – they would love, love, love your help!

And, there is always a lot to do before each meeting. If you find joining a new group a bit awkward, pitching in and working along side someone is an easy way to break the ice. Sign up to be the “Gate Greeter,” from 9:15 – 10 am, and provide wagons for members and guests to use for their heavy items. This way, you get to meet everyone coming into the meeting. Just sign up on the clip-board circulated during each meeting. Join us in the Bink Museum at 8:30 am any meeting day and help set up the tables and chairs and be part of the camaraderie that forms as we work together. Join Us!

Place fabric bag into plastic bag and then in a sturdy reusable carton. Use strapping tape to close. Your entry will be returned in the same carton. If we are to ship the entry after the show, enclose a pre-addressed return label and check payable to PBCQG for return shipping and insurance. INSURANCE:

Insurance coverage will be provided while items are in the possession of the Guild. The maximum limit for insurance coverage is $300 for small quilts, and $600 for large quilts unless a copy of a certified appraisal of a higher value is presented with the registration form.

AWARDS:

Ribbons and cash awards of $75, $50, and $25 for First, Second and Third place in all categories. Each prize will be awarded at the judge’s discretion. Not all prizes in all categories may be awarded. Ribbons will be awarded for Honorable Mentions.

The Best of Show will receive $100.00.  Ribbons and $25 cash will be awarded for Best Hand Quilting, Best Machine Quilting, Judge’s Choice, and Viewers’ Choice.

RULES:

(1)   Any individual or group may enter. All persons involved in the construction or quilting must be listed on the entry form.

(2)  There is a limit of two entries per category per person or group for judged quilts. A separate entry form and photo is required for each entry. Form may be photocopied.  Entry fees: $15.00 for judging as a non-member, $10 for our Guild members and $8.00 for exhibit only.

(3)   A non-returnable color photograph of the item must accompany each entry form for purposes of identification and insurance.

(4)  Entries must remain on display for the duration of the show 4:00pm October 13, 2018

(5)  Each entry must have a label on the lower back right hand corner with the maker/owner’s name and address. The label must be covered with a removable piece of fabric for judging.

(6)  Each entry must have a four (4) inch wide sleeve stitched to the top of the quilt except miniatures which must have a two (2) inch wide sleeve. This sleeve must be attached on both top and bottom edges of the sleeve. Bed-sized quilts must have an additional sleeve, the top of which must be attached 85″ from the bottom edge of the quilt so that the quilt will not touch the floor. Sleeve must be attached in a way that it will not show when the quilt is hanging.

(7) Each entry must be enclosed in a separate fabric bag or pillowcase with the entrant’s name clearly written on the bag. No Plastic bags please.

(8)  Quilts must be clean and in excellent condition.

(9)   Quilt size (width and length) must be listed on entry form. Accurate measurements are a must.

(10)   All judged quilts must have been made within the last five years.

The show offers a wide range of educational activities and exhibits. Visit the demonstration area where society members will be showcasing skills learned in club classes. Demonstrations will include faceting, cabochon making, chain making, and bead stringing just to name a few. Hourly door prizes awarded both days, a show Grand Prize drawing will be held. We have also invited several local education based clubs to display at our show, as well as the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Guest speakers will present a variety of educational topics.

The Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches was founded in 1966 as a club for like-minded individuals who shared a passion for gems, minerals, the lapidary arts and geological sciences. 50 years later it still serves residents of Palm Beach County with those interests and more. At the clubs workshop one can find a variety of work being done – from silversmithing to cutting and polishing precious and semiprecious gemstones.  At meeting, members spread knowledge and fellowship for members of all ages. The youngest of the club members are mentored in the junior rockhound program with activities specially crafted just for them.

Call For Artists, Art Organizations! Art Village PBC Exhibition At South Florida Fair 2016

For the first time the South Florida Fair will include an Art Village, offering fine arts and crafts to its visitors. The Annual South Florida Fair is the main event on the Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach, FL which occurs over a 17 day period. For the first time the South Florida Fair will include an Art Village, offering fine arts and crafts to its visitors. The annual South Florida Fair is the main event on the Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach, FL which occurs over a 17 day period, generally in the last two weeks of January each year. Over the past several years, the annual fair has incorporated a theme as a means of stimulating tourism as well as the educational and cultural interest of the residents of Palm Beach County and beyondIn keeping with the this year’s theme “Discover the Palm Beaches” We will be jurying in Palm Beach County artist and crafters. 

 

 

 

More than half a million visitors enter the gates at the South Florida Fair each year and we are honored to be able to offer artist a chance to show the fair patrons your art! This is a great opportunity to get exposure and to get your art in the homes and offices of the many fair visitors.

  • The artist call for the Art Village PBC 2016 Exhibition keeping in this year’s theme of “Discover the Palm Beaches”
  • Call is open to all artists and crafters who reside and work in Palm Beach County.
  • All work to be exhibited must be well conceived & expertly executed and family friendly.
  • Buy/sell vendors are strictly prohibited.

  • Entry Fee: (Art Village PBC Exhibition 2016 is non-refundable): $20.00
  • If chosen by the jury there will be a low booth fee and all sales will have a percentage of 70%/15%/15% split.

The Art Village is offering a great opportunity to artist by being showcased at the lowest exhibit rates of the Fair. The normal Fair’s rate for an outdoor exhibit space is $85 a foot. That is a $600 savings to be a part of the inaugural Art Village.

Booth Fees:

  • $250 Entire Show (17 days) Jan. 15 – 31, 2016
  • $150 First 8 days Jan. 15 – 22, 2016 (upon availability)
  • $150 Second 9 days Jan. 21 – 31, 2016 (upon availability)

Each 10×10 booth space will require a sturdy white top tent with walls, anchors and weights. Tents will remain up for entire exhibition. (If you chose the first 9 day option the breakdown of your tent will be at Midnight on Jan. 22, 2016. All set up and break down time will happen when the cannot be moved until the fair has closed on.)

No refunds for no show artist or artist that chose to withdraw from the show during their scheduled time for any reason.

Laurietta Oakleaf started riding horses when she was 13 years old.   She tells us, ” I have been drawing for over 25 years with no professional training. I have recently decided to start trying to promote and sell my drawings in hopes of getting a gallery to show my artwork.”

She explains, ” I’ve suffered from epilepsy since I was 16 and developed Chronic Inflammatory Demylenating Polyneuropathy (AKA “CIDP”) in 2001. This disease started out as Guillian-Barre syndrome, knocking me down flat and giving me a wake-up call to slow down and enjoy life and my family/friends. I was completely paralyzed from the neck down for about a month and eventually got feeling back into my upper body, but was paralyzed from the hips down for 18 months. I eventually have been able to walk in leg braces, but I still have constant episodes and any one episode could put me back forever… but so far, I am walking and this is due to my riding and my horses! Most doctors have told me that I should not be walking or I would never walk again. I did surprise them because I believed that I would and never gave up!

“Years later, I was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma stage IV on the day that my grandfather died of Pancreatic Cancer. That was hard but I remembered how HARD my grandfather fought and he was someone that I looked up to. I now see that he is my angel and has been helping me fight and giving me strength on a daily basis. The lymphoma was a shock and led me to realize that life is good and to treasure everyone that has ever touched your life or been in it. When people hear the word, CANCER, they immediately think death. I came to realize that my two horses gave me a strength and helped to keep me here. Today, I am still fighting the pain from the cancer. I guess the fight will never go away, but I have found a strength within myself that I never knew I had.”

Laurietta has been training in Florida since 2011, when she moved here, so she could take her training seriously. Unfortunately, in October this year she had another GBS/CIDP Attack and was hospitalized for months. “I had to start rehab because of how hard it hit me this time and how hard it hit my legs. I finally was just about ready to come home when in January, I ended back in the hospital for surgery and was there for another month. Currently I am trying to get back to riding Nikki and working on my tests for this year’s events.  Since 2008, I have shown in many international competitions around the world for disabled equestrian dressage riders.”

Laurietta explains, ” I hope you realize after reading this, that I want to touch ONE person and inspire MANY people to get out and live their dreams!  Dreams are hard to come by and so many people give up on them… my goal is to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics. Through hard work and determination, I made the selection trials for 2014 WEG last year. Unfortunately, due to complications, financial problems, and my illnesses last year, we just could not make the selection trials to try for the World Equestrian Games, so I decided to hold off and keep training and work for this year.”

“Paraequestrian dressage is dressage for the disabled, but we ride and train the same as any athlete, except we get to carry a card for dispensations to help us ride. For example, I carry 2 whips in place of my legs because of the weakness here.” Selling her artwork will help Laurietta continue to support her riding and working toward the Olympics in 2016.

Laurietta looks forward to participating in several CPEDI competitions this year, including:  California in June 2015; Texas in October 2015; The Paraequestrian Nationals; Local Clinics; Winter Dressage Circuit USDF level in Wellington, FL; USDF Regionals for Level 1; Try out for the Friesian Breed Award; Attend IFSHA World Champions in Las Vegas.  She is looking for hotel sponsors or people who will give their hotel points for her to use.  She also looks forward to a European Tour next spring. All monetary donations go into the USPEA account in my name which is 501c(3). “This way whether I use this money for the CPEDI shows or for Europe, it is all monitored by the USPEA and donors know exactly where the money goes.
