Delray Gets It Right! Join In Celebrating Delray Beach “Plein Fun Fest”!

Delray Beach Gets It Right!  Despite the recent trend of banning painters from capturing the local scenes on the street in cities such as St. Augustine, Winter Park, and Barcelona, Spain, the city of Delray Beach is actively supporting plein air painters!  Delray Beach understands the difference between hucksters bothering tourists in exchange for a few coins for entertainment and the artistic endeavors of artists who are capturing their town’s history in valuable works. The Rickie Report urges everyone to join in “Plein Air Fun Fest” on February 19th-21st.   On Friday, February 19th, plein air artists are welcome to stop by the tent in Old School Square for art critiques.  On Saturday, February 20th, come and watch the artists as they paint every day scenes and bring more emphasis to the “ordinary”.  Everything will be for sale at 5pm! On Sunday, February 21st, a new generation of plein air painters take center stage with mentors Ralph Papa and members of Plein Air Palm Beach (PAPB).  Here are the details and some sneak peeks! No wonder that Delray Beach has twice won the all American City Award, and was recently named by the US News and World Report “the most fun small city” in America. This city gets it right!

PLEIN FUN FEST WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Friday, February 19th: Paint-out & Critique

There will be a Paint-out with Critique for those Artists who want to join in the FUN but not interested in competition. There is a charge of $20 which includes hospitality suite. Registered Artists will meet at Old School Square at 9 AM and decide where to paint. Critique leaders will be available to offer assistance to those who are new to plein air. This Plein Air Paint-out allows artists the opportunity to enjoy not only painting but sharing their creativity with the public.

To the viewers, this art form can be very exciting because it invites them into the creative process: the sight, sound, and even smell of the artists’ world. One of the best parts of plein air painting is the congeniality of artists.

At Noon the artists will meet again at Old School Square Field House for an Artist Hospitality Suite. From there we will break into groups of no more than 10 for a shared art critique.

ABOUT PLEIN AIR

En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The mid-19th century saw working in natural light become particularly important to the impressionists, which only increased with the introduction of paint in tubes, giving additional portability to the artists.

Elfrida Schragen Is Featured in Two Exhibits and Offers a Plein Air Meet Up

Elfrida Schragen’s father was a professional artist. Color, subject matter, value and design were constant topics of discussion. While her career diverted to the world of psychology and teaching, in 2007 her two worlds joined. In her home town of Victoria, the issue of the homeless was becoming a political hotbed and very visible. A new shelter was planned and ways to raise money were being sought. With the help and support of the street pastor and the volunteers in existing, rather run-down facilities, Elfrida started a project of painting portraits of the homeless. She spent time on the streets, got to know her subjects, and took photos, with their permission.  She painted 25 portraits which were sold to companies, associations, churches, and individuals. $25,000 was raised and many portraits were donated back to hang in the dinning room of “Our Place”, the new shelter.  The Rickie Report is pleased to share Elfrida’s story of art, compassion and vision.  Her newest artwork will be shown in two exhibits, one locally and one across the pond, which you can visit virtually.  In addition, everyone is invited to join Elfrida for a Plein Air Meet Up on January 8th.  The details are here.

A Unique Project:

In 2007, Elfrida’s two worlds joined. She had been retired and submerged in self-directed art studies. In her home town of Victoria, the issue of the homeless was becoming a political hotbed and very visible. A new shelter was planned and ways to raise money were being sought. With the help and support of the street pastor and the volunteers in existing, rather run down facilities, Elfrida started a project of painting portraits of the homeless. She spent time on the streets, got to know her subjects, took photos with their permission. She painted 25 portraits which were sold to companies, associations, churches, and individuals.  $25,000 was raised and many portraits were donated back to hang in the dining room of “Our Place”, the new shelter.

"The Rose" by Elfrida Schragen

“The Rose” by Elfrida Schragen

The shelter, Our Place, has been a great success story. They have helped many to get re-established in a functional independence. They have offered shelter to those wishing to get off the streets, and food, clean clothes, bathing facilities, much needed social and medical help, and links to other helpful groups.  In 2014 the shelter decided to open their doors 24/7 and another push for money was on.

"Nicky" by Elfrida Schragen

“Nickie” by Elfrida Schragen

At this time Elfrida was juried in to be a month long artist-in-residence at the Delta Point Harbour Inn. Artist friends stressed how important it was to have a project or focus during that month. I it was a natural to start a new series of portraits, complete 12 during the residency, and sell them to assist in keeping Our Place open 7 instead of 5 days a week. Time spent getting to know these challenged individuals, photographing, painting and writing about them.

“Mounts Botanical Bridge” by Elfrida Schragen

Elfrida reunited with her artistic side in a casual way, in her early 40’s, taking a few courses, putting on a few shows. Her mediums included 5 years in acrylic reflecting the world of playful fantasy; 8 years in clay sculpture focusing on the human form; another 8 years exploring in portraits and landscapes through the vivid world of pastels; and finally in the last 10 years, settling down to working on plein aire and portraits with oils.

Patricia Maguire’s view is that,” Art is nature as seen through the filter of emotions.”  She explains to The Rickie Report, ” I have been drawing and painting all my life. Sometimes, even when my hands are still, I am painting in my mind. I see the world through the prism of light and shapes.  I have not chosen to paint, rather it has chosen me, and I feel it is something I must do.”

“My formative years were spent in big cities, with lots of access to museums, galleries and schools, but I have chosen to be closer to nature in the last decades. I live on the water, and escape to the mountains. I hope this love of our natural world communicates itself to you in my work. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and spent years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Caracas, Venezuela. I have now lived in Florida, USA, for the past decades. Each country has left footprints,” she shares.
