Silversmithing Class!

You will learn all the basics of Silversmithing and jewelry making.

This class will be taught from the following view points:

1. It will be taught as a metals class not an art class.
All the basics of metal smithing for the creation of jewelry will be taught with Mr. Norris’ unique techniques he has learned over the past 30 years of studying and teaching silversmithing.

2. Soldering: You will taught to use nothing but hard solder for all solder joints on new construction. It is easier, faster, and makes better jewelry!  Learning how to be an expert with a torch is the secret and it is not that difficult!

3. That everyone in the class will want to do Silversmithing to make a living. An emphasis will be placed on designing, making and selling jewelry for a profit. If you wish to do Silversmithing as a hobby, that is fine, but after taking this class you will be able to make nearly any type of silver jewelry and it will be good enough to sell. How to sell your jewelry will be discussed and taught!

4. Below are some other unique, even controversial, techniques that will be taught. You will be taught to spray on your flux and use it as a temperature gauge for soldering. You will be taught what flux does, and that flux does not “clean” the silver.
You will be taught that you can not use too much flux

You will be taught to use nothing but strip (sheet) solder in large snippets, not those silly little tiny snippets, and for sure not to use wire and paste solders!

You will be taught how solder works on a physics level so that you fully understand why and how to solder correctly.
You will be taught to use a $10.00 torch from Ace Hardware. It will make you thousands of dollars worth of jewelry so that you can purchase more important tools and equipment. The best torch for silversmithing will also, of course, be shown and discussed.

You will be taught that if you are doing repairs, YOU ARE LOOSING MONEY!
You will be taught that every time you pick up a jeweler’s saw, YOU ARE LOOSING MONEY!
You will be taught never to use rouges.
You will be taught to never worry about “fire coat” or “fire scale” and why.
You will be taught a way to make a bezel that will forever change the way that you make them. FAST AND PERFECT!!!! You will be taught why you should never use any thing but serrated bezel.
You will be taught why you will never want to use a “jeweler’s bench”.
You will be taught that you only need two files to do all your filing on sterling silver.
You will be taught the difference between working with silver and gold.
You will be taught that if you are a beginner you should not even work in gold and why, if you do, you will loose money! You will be taught many unusual ways to sell your jewelry, and for a good profit.

This is not a “project class”, you will only make one “Southwestern” or “American Indian” styled ring. By making it you will learn all the basics to make just about anything!

“If you are a beginner, I will teach you everything you need to know to become a successful, profitable Silversmith!  If you are an experienced silversmith, I will teach you to work quicker, make better jewelry and make more PROFIT!” Don Norris

From Under the Earth to Jewelry Worthy: Intarsia and Cabachons

Once you understand how a piece of rock from the earth becomes a shiny, polished part of a piece of jewelry, you will appreciate the expertise it takes to create it.  The Rickie Report admits to being a lover of mother nature and it most awestruck when an everyday rock becomes a magnificent ring, earring, or part of a necklace.  We asked Jeff Ursillo, a past President of the Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches to share some information with us. Intarsia is a geometric design, similar to marquetry.  Check out this post to see some incredible examples!

TRR:   How did you get interested in being a “rock hound”?

JU:  A customer at the print shop I work at told me about a gem and mineral show that was coming up and I took the family to it as a fun “family” event. I had never been exposed to minerals before and was amazed at the colors, shapes and overall beauty of the mineral world. I was hooked!  We joined the Gem & Mineral Society at their next meeting (December 1995)

TRR:  What types of things does the Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches do  at their meetings?

JU:  A typical meeting consists of a short business meeting (15-25 minutes) a break for refreshments and then our program for the night. We have door prizes and raffle items at all the meetings. Our programs are always “hobby related”. We usually have speakers, but occasionally do demonstrations, show DVDs, and have member “Show & Sell” nights.
Rhodacrosite

Rhodacrosite

TRR:  What if I don’t know anything about gems or minerals but I just appreciate “mother nature” and the beautiful formations I see in rocks?
JU:  The Society is full of helpful people who are willing to share their knowledge or identify a mineral specimen. We have a large library that is available to members to withdraw books or DVDs.
Intarsia

Intarsia

TRR:  Please share how you take a natural rock and make a cabochon out of it, ready to be set as a piece of jewelry.

JU:   If I’m starting with a rough piece of material, the first step is to cut slabs about 1/4 inch thick using a diamond bladed rock saw. Once the slab is cut, an area is marked off and using a smaller diamond saw, the desired area is trimmed out to the approximate shape or “blank”.  The blank is then taken to a series of grinding wheels where it is formed to the final shape. Using a series of finer and finer sanding wheels the stone is polished to a brilliant shine.
TRR:  The Gem, Jewelry, Bead and Mineral Show is your big fundraiser.  Tell us more about how that has grown over the years.
JU:   When the show first stared in 1966 it was held is a side room at the Auditorium, also known as

Intarsia

Intarsia

the Leakee Teepee. There were seven dealers from the West Palm Beach area. As the years went on and the show became more popular, it moved out onto the main floor of the Auditorium and hosted  20 dealers. Display cases, which featured members work or collections of minerals were added to the show. A demonstration area was added where the public was introduced to the art of lapidary.

When the Auditorium was sold, the Society moved west to the South Florida Fairgrounds. The larger area allowed us to add more dealers, expand the display and demo areas. The show now features over 65 dealers, a large demonstration area and a children’s area with a Carolina style flume mine, fossil dig, geode cracking and so much more!
The Society is a great place to learn about minerals, fossils, jewelry and many related areas. We offer over 25 classes, ranging from Cabochon cutting, beadwork, wire wrapping, and chain making, to name a few.

Gem and Mineral Society Changes Meeting Site to Science Museum

When The Rickie Report attended the Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches’ Annual Gem and Mineral Show last month, we felt like we had come home. Mother Nature’s bounty could be found at every display.  Vendors were eager to explain any type of stone and where it came from.  The members were so welcoming and yet many hesitated to talk about their own amazing artisanship.  There were a few tables where members sat and worked on their own pieces. At their  upcoming December meeting, they show and share their own work.  Many of them are not really interested in selling what they have made (It is enough to share their artistry with others) but some will be selling their creations.  Everyone is welcome to stop by and meet this down-to-earth group! If you know some children who are interested in rocks, stones and minerals, there is a Junior Membership!

Crocoite is a fairly rare mineral in many parts of the world, consisting of lead chromate, PbCrO4. The relative rareness comes from the way it forms: it requires an oxidation zone of lead ore bed and presence of what are called ultramafic rocks, which act as a source of chromium. Ultramafic rocks are 90% mafic minerals (dark colored, high magnesium and iron content) – the mantle is composed of such rocks. (Jeff Scovil photo)

The South Florida Fairgrounds

The roots of The Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches reach back to the latter part of the 1960s. At that time a group of like-minded mineral and jewelry enthusiasts would gather at different homes to discuss their interest in these fields. In January, 1966 the Society was officially chartered as a Florida corporation, with its stated purpose being to provide a place for gem and mineral collectors to gather and share in their hobby.  Throughout the years, the Society has shared and spread its vast knowledge into the community. This was achieved in part by presenting a series of hands-on mineral lectures to various Palm Beach Schools.

The Society’s largest public outreach is its annual show.  Each year, for the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Gem and Mineral Society takes over the Expo East Building of the South Florida Fairgrounds to hold its Gem, Jewelry, Bead and Fossil Show.  The show features a wide array of dealers who carry merchandise from all over the world.  Additionally, Society members come out to spread the word and educate visitors about the Society and the hobby. The show features a Demonstration Area, where members showcase the many classes offered to members of the Society.

Lots of Family Fun Activities!

In the past, the Society has had special exhibits that greet visitors upon entering the Expo building.  Past attractions have included: a Moon Rock from Apollo 17, two Ruby statues weighing several thousand carats each, and a life-size photo of a Mastodon skeleton (as well as actual bones from the dig) that the Society helped unearth in Palm Beach County.

One of the Show’s biggest attractions is our Mining Flume.  This is a running water flume where guests can buy buckets containing filler materials and rough mineral specimens.  Sitting at the flume, visitors sift through the materials in the buckets, guided by Society members who help visitors identify what they find.  Visitors can keep anything they find in the bucket, and kids love taking home their beautiful stones.

Herkimer Diamond

The Society also has a Fossil Dig.  Kids love digging in the sand to find and keep real Florida fossils.  Again guided by members, the kids learn about the fossils they are finding, and are always thrilled to leave with a bag of bones!

Vendors Sell Wide Variety of Beads, Gems, Minerals, Fossils

Gem Society members love to share their knowledge with the public and generate new interest. Within the Society, classes are always ongoing for members who want to further their skills.  Classes include cabochon cutting, faceting, wire wrapping, chain maille, beading, enameling and so much more. Scholarships are also awarded to members to attend one of two lapidary schools; Wildacres or William Holland.

The Wonders of Mother Nature!

The Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches remains a thriving organization that aspires to share knowledge and join people together through a common interest.  Whether out in the community or attending small classes within the Society, our members love to swap information and skill sets with anyone willing to learn.  The Society will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2016 still going strong and sharing a love of stones with the world! Join the fun at the the South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center on November 17th and 18th.  For more information visit:  www.gemandmineral.cc   or call  561-585-2080.

Using Gems and Jewelry To Communicate Throughout History

The Rickie Report expects the upcoming meeting of Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches to be entertaining as well as informative.  Society President, Jen Ursillo, will be presenting.

Gem and Mineral Society of the Palm Beaches Presents

Using Gems and Jewelry To Communicate Through History

 October 18, 2012, 7:30 PM

Stones of October: Opal or Tourmaline. Stones of November: Topaz or Citrine. If you have something in these colors be sure to wear them!

Andamooka Opal Rock

Depending on the conditions in which an opal forms it can take on many colors from clear to white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black.

Polished opal

White and greens are the most common. No need to travel to Australia, come to the meeting to see some specimens! Commonly considered the birthstone of October, opal evokes many mysteries.

Pink Tourmaline

Tourmaline is another stone associated with the month of October which comes in a variety of colors. Depending on their source ( iron, magnesium or lithium) tourmaline reflects almost any color: blue, green, red, yellow or pink.

Watermelon Tourmaline Cuff

Bi-colored and multicolored crystals are common which reflect the variables of chemistry during their crystallization.  A popular one is “watermelon tourmaline”.

Variety of topaz gemstones

Topaz is considered by many to be November’s official birthstone. Pure topaz is colorless and transparent but is usually tinted by impurities of the rock with which it has formed. You can find a wide variety of topaz in wine, yellow, pale gray, reddish-orange, or blue brown. It can also be made white, pale green, blue, gold, red/yellow or opaque to transparent/translucent. Pink topaz is rare.

Citrine is a subset of the quartz family.  It can be found in many colors, including red/orange, brown, and shades of green/yellow. Natural citrines are rare and most commercially used citrines are heat-treated amethyst.

Cut Citrine ready for jewelry

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings!  Bring a friend, colleague, family member –ANYONE who shares a passion for fossils, gems and minerals!
