ANNOUNCING:

PAINT PALM BEACH EN PLEIN AIR 2017 (Formerly the Annual Lighthouse ArtCenter Plein Air Festival)

March 8-12, 2017

LACpaint-palm-beach-logo_orig2017.jpg

Lighthouse ArtCenter announced today the names of the 35 artists selected to participate in the 2017 Paint Palm Beach en Plein Air competition now in its 4th year at North Palm Beach County’s critically acclaimed art gallery and education center. The event will take place March 8-12, 2017. Plein Air has become a popular competition throughout the world, giving artists different venues to create in, while being challenged by the length and surroundings of the four-day contest. The selected artists compete for prize money and are able to display their work at the Lighthouse ArtCenter for gallery visitors to view, offer their opinions and purchase a favored painting at the Collector’s Party on Saturday, March, 11th, final day of competition. Paintings may also be purchased “wet” from the artist at the painting sites.
“We modified this year’s artist selection process after an outstanding 2016 competition,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Chair of Painting and Drawing and Co-Chair of this event, Ted Matz. “Feedback from our former contestants suggested we narrow our field of artists to give each participant more exposure to the crowds drawn to watch them when they’re sketching and painting at the various venues. ”
With more than 120 applicants for the limited slots, Matz said the selection process became one of scoring several criteria, not all of which were based on direct artistic skills. “We wanted to be fair to artists who may not have participated in our Plein Air competition in the first three years. And fair to the Lighthouse ArtCenter patrons who want to see how new artists interpret our local scenery when challenged to capture it on canvas.”

The 35 artists selected scored highest when evaluated by the following:
1. Originality
2. Overall Quality
3. Consistency of Style
4. Technical Skills
5. Marketability to Audience

“We are thrilled by the artistic diversity selected to compete in March 2017,” said Lighthouse ArtCenter Curator Janeen Mason. “We had submissions from artists in 27 states and two who are international. We are excited to see how these artists translate our South Florida seascapes, landscapes and architecture.”

Gail Erickson is Featured Artist At Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery

Fine artist, ceramic sculptor and instructor, Gail Erickson is the Featured Artist at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery in Lake Worth with an Opening Reception on Friday, February 6th.  The public is invited to “Feminine Fusion of Fin, Feather and Leather”.  Meet Gail, an enthusiastic artist whose “intent is to reveal, yet conceal, allowing the viewer to develop a personal connection to a piece.”  Gail’s mermaids, birds and clay portraits are thoughtful and fascinating. Texture plays a major role in unifying her body of work. Surfaces of sculptures are finished using combinations of slip, stains, underglazes, glazes and patinas.  Gail recently began creating clay sculptures of furry friends.  Stop by and speak to her about a commission of your favorite pet!  The Rickie Report shares the details and a sneak peek.

Originally from NY, Gail has been making art in some form for most of her life. Her childhood was filled with art classes in public school and art books. She excels at teaching herself new techniques including quilling ( thin paper strips rolled, glued, pinched, and assembled into a larger composition), creating mosaic pieces and drawing. However, working with clay has always been her medium of choice.

While still in high school, Gail attended Wilson Technological Center in Suffolk County NY for Dental Lab Technology. She spent many years in the dental field as a technician and then as a dental assistant. She tells The Rickie Report, “Making crowns by carving wax and creating temporary crowns using acrylic satisfied some of my creative desires for that chapter in my life. In this field I also learned how to use many instruments and materials which prepared me for my future career in art”.

After starting a family of her own, Gail’s passion for the arts began to consume her. She took pottery classes, ceramics, design, 3-D design and drawing classes at Palm Beach State College FL.  In 2005 she won her first two awards, “Passion For Art” and “Three Dimensional Design” at the Eissey Campus at PBSC.

At the same time Gail traveled with The Art Alliance to London, San Francisco, and NYC visiting the major museums and galleries. She also volunteered at her daughter’s elementary school bringing “The Meet The Masters Program” to the children and she taught Pottery Studio Class at UB Kinsey Elementary School of the Arts. Presently she teaches a clay sculpting class at Wellington Community High School.

Gail is constantly involved in learning more about her fine craft.  She is a member of The Ceramic League of The Palm Beaches, The Wellington Art Society, and Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery.  Her collectors have described her work as “provocative and a little dark but in a good way”. The artist would agree.

“I Wish” Sculpture by Gail Erickson

“My work is but a perception of a moment once reflected. It is inspired by family, nature and the human form. It is a product of my feelings, emotions and passion for the tactile nature of clay.  Although my interests in clay are varied, I am drawn to portrait and hybrid figurative bird sculptures. My intent is to reveal, yet conceal, allowing the viewer to develop a personal connection to a piece.”

Her large sculptures are created using flattened rings starting from the bottom working up. Texture plays a major role in unifying her body of work. Surfaces of sculptures are finished using combinations of slip, stains, underglazes, glazes and patinas.

Amelia Costa

Amelia grew up in a large, close knit family in Peru.   She tells us, “My family emigrated to the United States, so that my siblings and I could attend University. I received a Bachelor of Science and after some time in the business world decided to pursue my interest in the arts. I attended Florida Atlantic University to study painting. I gravitated towards clay, just before graduation and stayed awhile longer to satisfy my curiosity and my growing fascination with the medium”.
DSC_0117
“In my work, I have combined my two interests  in illustration and clay. Most recently I moved away from color and  concentrated on the story the pieces convey. My aim is to have the pieces tell the viewer the stories that they tell me, and share the journey with me”.

Irene Jalowayski

Palm Beach Smashing Glass

Irene tells us, “I am a retired speech pathologist and Florida native, who lives in West Palm Beach.  I was always an art lover/collector and began taking fused glass classes nine years ago.  I  studied with a private teacher, took classes at McMow Art Glass Center,  Art Glass Environments,  Kay Weiner’s Glass Classes, and in several out-of-town venues. Now I have my own studio because my hobby has become my passion!”

Fused Glass by Irene Jalowayski

Fused Glass by Irene Jalowayski

“Working with glass has allowed me to express my creativity and love for color, shape and form.  I get lost in my work and experience a thrill each time I open my kiln.  I  sell my work at several galleries and am thrilled to be one of the artists at the Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg, Artisans on the Ave in Lake Worth, and  at the  OSGS Gallery in the Northwood neighborhood.  My creations have been exhibited in many juried art shows and I was featured as an Emerging Artist at ArtiGras, 2012”.  I can be reached by email at   Irene Jalowayski ijaloway@yahoo.com   or visit my website at www.palmbeachsmashingglass.com

Sharon Kurlychek

“I engaged with the energy of clay in the 70’s when I first learned to to throw pots on a kick wheel at art school in Cleveland, Ohio.  I took more advanced classes (David Vargo)  and the joy of clay settled into by hands.  In the 80’s, I lived in the Dominican Republic, where I taught English. Experimenting with the production of primitive pottery– digging clay deposits from riverbeds, creating glazes from the ashes I collected from a bakery’s wood-fired oven, and firing in open pits was joyful.  Back in the US, I bought an electric kiln, continued my art studies (The Cleveland Institute of Art and Andrea Gill from Alfred University) and began teaching at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood”.
Sharon Kurlychek

Sharon Kurlychek

“When I moved to Florida, for subsequent art festivals, I created a line of tropical number tiles. My website, www.islandtiles.com shows 12 designs.  Customers can choose the tiles and colors to place an order for a custom house number tile.  I also do commission work for tile murals and signs, working with designers, HOA’s or home owners, offering color sketches and cost estimates for custom work.  I can be reached through my website or e-mail: islandtiles@bellsouth.net.”
Sharon Kurlychek

Sharon Kurlychek

” I am continually inspired by fellow clay artists (Betty Wilson and members of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches).  My art career has recently spun off in a new direction.  Taking classes (Carla Golembe at the Delray Center for the Arts), spending time in the artsy town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and a mixed media workshop (Dee Roper at La Fabrica Aurora) has had a big influence on the direction of my creativity!  Now I am creating mixed media pieces, acrylic paintings and collages!”

John McCoy

John tells us, “I am a functional potter. In my work, I strive for qualities of simplicity, honesty and  a sense of fluidity. When making my pots, I depend on intuition and feeling, rather than upon conceptual ideas and analysis. Natural and organic objects, along with the varied and rich traditions of ceramics are the main influences of my work. I have a very classical approach to clay, even when combining and altering forms”.
John McCoy

John McCoy

“During the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to put my work in  a wood fired Anagama kiln. I feel my forms have been enhanced and visually strenghthened by the warm colors of the ash deposits and the textures and patterns created by the mark of the fire. This natural process allows the viewer to share my experience  of working with clay, from the moment my hands shape and form the clay, leaving my mark, to the fluidity of the flames that leave their impression on the surface of the pot forever”.

Flamingo Clay StudioLake Worth Art League Gallery Art Link International, Clay Glass Metal Stone Cooperative Gallery, Bruce Webber Galleries, Maryanne Webber Galleries, Margot Stein Gallery, Artefact Pardo Gallery, McMow Art Glass, Art Gallery Designs, Shoe String Designs, Local Smoking Domain,  and Artisans on the Ave. are just a few of the participating galleries.
