Sidney and Lee Klein have been traveling the country, sharing their passion for fine crafted jewelry using what we think of a “small change”. Lee learned to solder while “on the road” and took an immediate liking to making cuff links. She shares, “Look at these Kennedy Half Dollar Eagles. These beautiful eagles are on the center of the Kennedy Half Dollar, which is the symbol of our nation. The eagle is the same shape as the eagle on the Morgan Dollar, so they would make a nice set. The eagle is the size of a dime. The Cuff Link backs are made of Sterling silver. They have a small joint at the attachment, so that they will give when you set your arm down. These are dipped in Sterling Silver and 14k gold, but I love to make cuff links, so we can dip them in all gold, or all silver if you wish. They are coated with 4 coats of automotive acrylic to protect the finish.” At $80 for the pair, what a meaningful gift for someone who is a coin collector, relative who is a public servant or an eagle naturalist!
If you are looking for something a bit more contemporary, check out this dolphin pendant cut from a Gibraltar 50 pence. These beautiful dolphins are seem to be saying good things will always be going ’round, and ’round. Dipped in 14k gold to enhance their beauty. Size approx 1/2 dollar. A special treat for the dolphin lover in your life that is not mass marketed!
Sid relates, “International Cut Coins has been creating beautiful hand cut jewelry out of coinage from countries around the world for the past 35 years. Cutting coins is perfectly legal. Section 331, title 18 of the U.S. code, prohibits, among other things, the fraudulent alteration and mutilation of U.S. and foreign coins. For example, it is illegal to alter the date, or mintmark of an inexpensive common coin so that it has the date and mintmark of a valuable rare coin. This statute does not the mutilation of coins if done without fraudulent intent, or if the coins are not used fraudulently.”
Beautiful cut coins featuring animals, and just about any other subject, hand carved Zodiac signs, hand carved military emblems, hand carved AA Recovery pocket pieces, hand carved service organization medallions, & other miniature works of art transformed by hand into one-of-a-kind masterpieces by Sid & Lee Klein. Most of these pieces can also be made into earrings, cuff links, tie tacks, bolo ties, belt buckles, key chains, and money clips.
The Rickie Report looked at an meticulous and detailed list of coins the Kleins use for their hand-made pieces. There is something for every hobbyist, nature lover, international country-focused collector, religion, military designation. Know someone who collects angels? This might be the one for them! ”We call this Chile 5 Pesos our ‘Angel of Freedom’. On the whole coin, she had chains on her wrists that were broken (freedom). She has wings (freedom to fly) and under her feet the coin said “Libertad” (Liberty). We love this angel who is the size of a U.S. dime. If you love turtles, you can purchase one made of a Tuvalu dollar. Klein took some liberties with this cute turtle, adding the water lines and the golden coral. It is a unique shape for a coin.
Coins have been used as jewelry for centuries. Sid and Lee Klein’s business takes this tradition to the next level. Each piece is individually created to enhance the beauty of the coin and makes a perfect gift for any occasion. If you have a special coin of your own, stop by and see what Sid and Lee can design for you!
