Norton to close for two weeks in September:
Main Lobby to get New Art Installation
& Café to be enhanced
As it did last year, the Norton Museum of Art will close for part of September to make enhancements improving the visitor experience. During the closing, which runs from Sept. 3 through Sept. 17, the main lobby will be transformed with a new artwork, Café 1451 will get a new look, galleries will be reinstalled, and general building and campus maintenance will be done.
The Museum will re-open on Sept. 18.
New York-based artist Rob Wynne will install a large-scale work titled, I Remember Ceramic Castles, Mermaids & Japanese Bridges. The installation will incorporate the Norton’s proximity to the ocean through silkscreened wallpaper and glass-beaded drawings of life found above, near and under the sea. This is the second site-specific artwork commissioned for the lobby; the first was Jose Alvarez’s Vibrating Strands of Energy.
Café 1451 also will undergo a transformation with new colors and designs to make the dining experience even more enjoyable and entertaining. Visitors will find a refreshed, brighter café. The two-week closing also will be used to reinstall artwork from the Museum Collection, and do general maintenance inside and outside the building in preparation for the 2012-2013 season.
The first new exhibition of 2012-2013 opens on Sept. 27 with the inaugural Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers, an international, biennial showcase and award for emerging photographers. The five finalists for the prize are featured in this exhibition and were selected by a panel of five internationally-known artists.
The finalists are: Analia Saban based in Los Angeles; Nin Solis (Mexico City); Eunice Adorno (Mexico City); Mauro D’Agati (Palermo, Italy), and Bjorn Veno (London). In December, one will be awarded the Rudin Prize of $20,000. The prize is named after the late Lewis Rudin of New York City, and is generously sponsored by his daughter, Beth Rudin DeWoody.
Other events occurring shortly after re-opening include:
- Art After Dark on Sept. 20 celebrates the Indian film industry popularly known as “Bollywood,” and will feature Indian music, dancing and food.
- The Museum’s Seventh Annual Moon Festival from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 features great performances, artist demonstrations, hands-on art and calligraphy activities for kids and adults, tours and gallery talks, and of course, delicious moon cakes ordered fresh from Chinatown.
