The Norton Museum of Art Celebrates Work of Contemporary Women Artists with Jenny Seville

Jenny Saville at the Norton Museum of Art is the British painter’s first survey shown in an American Museum.  The Saville Exhibition is the first in the Norton’s new series celebrating the work of contemporary women artists.   Premiering November 30, 2011 and running through March 4, 2012, the exhibition will include never before seen work in which Seville continues her exploration of classical figurative painting on a monumental scale.  Organized by Cheryl Brutvan, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Norton Museum, with the artist, Jenny Saville will feature fifteen large-scale paintings and fifteen drawings dating from 1992 - 2011.

This exhibition is the first in the Norton’s newly created series titled RAW (Recognition of Art by Women), made possible by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund/ML Dauray Arts Initiative.  RAW’s mission is to discover, highlight, showcase, and promote living women artists.

In this groundbreaking exhibition, Saville’s understanding of the human figure is seen as a continuation of figurative studies in the tradition of Michelangelo, Degas, and Soutine, among others, as well as De Kooning, whose handling of paint inspires Saville.  In addition to the exhibit there will be an accompanying catalog, one of the few dedicated to the artist’s work, authored by Norton Curator Cheryl Brutvan and Nicholas Cullinan, Curator at the Tate Modern in London.
